La Jolla Shores in San Diego County

Nearby to the residential area, a sandy beach which is about one mile
long is the La Jolla Shores (8200 Camino del Oro). Among all the beaches of San
Diego, the waves at this beach in summer time are generally most tender but the
rip currents may still be strong at times. That is why many scuba training classes
are being conducted at La Jolla Shores. A beautiful green area called Kellogg Park
is just behind the main lifeguard station which is absolutely perfect for picnics
and get-togethers. Between the park and the sand, a wide cement boardwalk parallels
a portion of the beach.
La Jolla Shores borders the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Ecological Reserve. Fishing
and removal of objects from this area is strictly restricted. At the north end of
this beach you will f ind the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Scripps Pier.
The pier is not open to the public, but within the 1/2 mile of La Jolla Shores one
can enjoy the proximity to the Steven Birch Aquarium which is open daily.
Within the City limits, you will find the only beachfront boat launch at La Jolla
Shores. Small vessels can be launched directly into the surf at the foot of Avenida
de la Playa which is approximately 300 yards south of the lifeguard station. This
boat launch is an unimproved one and vehicles are allowed to drive on the sand in
a very limited area at five miles per hour or less. It is highly recommended that
you have four wheel drive.
