Despite of
rapidly increasing population of
North
County, hats off to
Del Mar which is
still maintaining its rural yet sophisticated feel. Wake up
early in the morning and you will view that some trainers from
the famous
Del
Mar racetrack exercising their horses on the beach by The
River Mouth(29th st). Move towards Via De La Valle
and you can witness stately ranches and polo fields. All these
things are possible because of the Del Mar Beaches as the
visitors keep coming year after year. This is the magic of Del
Mar Beaches which includes three main beaches; all are large
in size and with loads of sand.
People of
Del Mar say “the
turf meets the surf”, which means the area where the San
Dieguito River congregates the sea, across from the race
track. The River Mouth is a large portion of beach with lots
of room for volleyball games and a gathering place for dogs.
Swimming is not recommended here as the sandbars are thin here
and also unpredictable current prevails here sometimes. But
this spot is perfect for your children to make their first
sand castle as it is very well sheltered from wind and surf.
Hold your
thought! The best is yet to come. Del Mar City Beach’s
northern half, which is the portion from
15th
Street to The River-mouth, is
perhaps the best in
San
Diego. Sand, swimming, surfing, you
name it! It is no less than a fantasyland combining
architectural dream houses flying colorful flags fronting a
wide sand beach with good swimming, intermediate surf and easy
access at every block. The only drawback is regarding its
park, if there were more there would certainly not be any
argument at all. The most popular zone with crowds and parking
is at the south end near
Powerhouse
Park, and the
17th
Street lifeguard tower is ground
zero. Most of the little parking available here is metered.
You can try for better in the higher numbered streets to the
north, or across the highway on the east side of
Coast
Boulevard. On special occasions
like 4th of July and Labor Day, people start arriving at dawn
to stake their claims.
South of
15th
Street is the bluffs line Del Mar
City Beach which are neither as high nor as steep as elsewhere
in
North
County. Even in the
highest tides, the beach is totally drivable all the way to
Torrey Pines, and you will also find a number of sketchy,
unsanctioned trails down from the cliffs. A dirt way which
parallels the train track on the bluff is a perfect place for
walkers and joggers, who can go for miles without encountering
a car or crossing a road. There are some patchy reefs offshore
along here, which creates some fairly good surf breaks at 15th
Street, 11th Street, 7th Street and south of 4th Street at a
place called G-Spot (so named for the womblike storm drain
pipe that pour out surfers onto the beach from an unmarked
dirt trail above). People who are not surfers and joggers do
use the beach here, but most of them opt for the northern
zone.
